We're asking Township officials for sidewalks, marked crossings, and flashing beacons so anyone can reach Airmount Park on foot.
On August 25, 2026, Mahwah EMS was dispatched to Airmount Road and East Slope Road for an elderly man struck by a car in the middle of the road.
We're not sharing this to sensationalize what happened. It's an area that needs to be addressed to improve safety.
Between Heritage Ln and East Slope Rd, the existing sidewalk abruptly ends. Children on bikes have been seen riding directly into the road, into oncoming traffic.
Extending the sidewalk 0.5 blocks closes the gap — an estimated 245–305 homes would gain safer access to Airmount Park.
People on Judith Ct and Sunnyside Rd, on the opposite side of Airmount Rd, have no safe walking route to Airmount Park — even if every fix above gets built.
We're requesting a sidewalk on that side, from Mahwah Rd through Sunnyside Rd and Judith Ann Ct to Airmount Park at E Mahwah Rd — an estimated 210–240 homes would gain safer access.
Even a marked crosswalk doesn't reliably slow fast-moving traffic. Every crosswalk on Airmount Rd should include a pedestrian-activated flashing beacon.
Flashing beacons (RRFBs) at every crosswalk — the Township already uses these on East Ramapo Ave near the train station.
Drivers regularly exceed the limit on Airmount Rd, with no real-time feedback telling them to slow down.
Radar speed signs that flash when a car is over the limit — a direct, in-the-moment prompt.

Close the gap where the sidewalk ends mid-block between Heritage Ln and East Slope Rd — just 0.5 blocks connects a large part of the Cragmere area.
So people on Judith Ct and Sunnyside Rd have the same safe access to Airmount Park as everyone else on Airmount Rd — an estimated 210–240 homes would benefit.
A press-button flashing light at each crossing down Airmount Road, so drivers get a clear signal to stop — including on Malcolm Rd, which leads to Betsy Ross School.

The Township committed to a crosswalk and Airmount Park entrance for Fall 2026 — see the green banner in The Route above. The four numbered requests still need community support to move forward.
